Pre-school Story Hour: Music

The first week of pre-school story hours revolved around music. Children 3-7 had fun listening to stories, music, making music with instruments, and making a craft.

The finger plays Grandma's Spectacles and Five Little Pigs were done from Marc Brown's book Finger Rhymes.

Summer Reading is Under Way!

Summer Reading started this Monday June 8th and we are already in the swing of things. This week Ms. Karin had three pre-school story hours and a toddler story hour. The staff and volunteers here at Hobart have signed up many kids for the summer reading program. Don't forget that every five books you read you get a prize. So come to the library and join us this summer for fun programs and neat prizes.

Teen Summer Reading

Express Yourself @ Your Library

Don't forget to read this summer because you can win some really cool prizes if you do. How do you enter? Well thanks for asking. You have to be 11 or over to enter the teen reading program. Say you read the book Twilight by Stephenie Meyer this summer. You get to fill out an entry form for the book and for every hundred pages in the book. So Twilight is 498 pages. You get 5 entries all together. We will pick three entries a week and the prizes are above in the picture. T-shirts, pen with notepad, tote bag, clock bookmark, guitar pic cell phone charm, or travel mug. The grandprize winner at the end of the summer will receive an MP3 player. READ, READ, READ!!!!

Summer Reading is Coming!

The 2009 Summer Reading for children and teens starts June 8th and ends August 1st. Our theme this year is “Be Creative @Your Library”. Children of all ages, including infants, as well as teens are invited to read or be read to for prizes. All participants will need to read or be read one book to sign up. This can be a very short board book. From then on, five picture books will equal one prize. For chapter books, the number of prizes are designated by the number of pages read. We will have a chart posted. Some of the prizes are Chinese Yoyo’s, Tatoos, Stickers, Fingertraps, Bouncy Balls, Cars, Necklaces, Bracelets, Rings, Notebooks, Flashlight Key Rings, Whistles, Sunglasses, Coloring Books, Sheriff’s Badges, and Fake Microphones. Teens can at the same time use the number of pages they have read to sign up for our weekly drawings. Teen weekly drawing prizes are comprised of gift cards and a variety of other items.

We also have summer reading programs planned for toddlers, preschoolers, school agers, pre-teens, and teens. Since the theme is “Be Creative @Your Library”, you will see pictures of various artists and creative people posted around the library. Children are also invited to give us their artwork to hang up in the library. If you have any questions, call us at the Hobart Library at 942-2243.

Toddler Programs

Thursdays: June 11 & 25, July 9 & 23

This half-hour program consists of a variety of stories, songs, finger plays, and nursery rhymes and simple crafts. This is for children ages two to three and their caregiver.

Preschool Storyhours (ages 3-7)

All storyhours will be offered on Tuesday @ 1pm or 6pm and Wednesday @ 10:30am

They last for one hour.

Wanted: Pre-teens and Teens (Ages 9&Up)

Sign up to be a Summer Reading Volunteer!

Summer reading at the library is very busy. So every summer we have a group of pre-teen and teen volunteers help us with a variety of tasks in the children's section.

Variety of tasks include:

1. Program Preparation

2. Program Set-Up and Clean Up

3. Helping with Crafts

4. Working at the Reader Sign-Up Table

5. Recording Book Read on Summer Reading Cards

This year, summer reading will begin June 8th and go through July 30th. If you want to volunteer and you are 9 or older, see Miss Karin (Karin Olsen) at the library or call her at 942-2243. She will give you a volunteer form to be filled out and signed by one of your parents. She will also briefly meet with one of your parents to go over summer reading and the volunteer rules. And then you are ready to volunteer. It's a lot of fun so we hope you'll join us!

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo simply means "The Fifth of May." Cinco de Mayo celebrates what happened in Mexico a long time ago. In 1861 Mexico was free but they had many problems. They owed a lot of money to other countries and the Mexican people were poor. The president, Benito Juarez, wanted to help his people so he stopped paying back the money owed to other countries. The ruler of France wanted his money and Mexico. He sent soldiers to Mexico. General Zaragoza waited for the French soldiers at the city of Puebla. The Mexican army was outnumbered and didn't have very good weapons. General Zaragoza had a plan. On May 5, 1862 he put his men on two hills outside the city. The French tried to go up the hills but the Mexican soldiers fought them off. Then it started to rain and the French soldiers could not get up the hills and the Mexicans won the battle. President Juarez was proud of the soldiers and declared Cinco de Mayo a holiday. Today in Mexico and the United States people celebrate.

It was really fun to make and very simple.

Supplies:

Green tissue paper
Red crepe streamer
tape or glue
scissors
candy

How to Make:

Take one sheet of tissue paper and fold in half. Shape into a cone. Tape the seam and twist and tape the tip of the cone. Fill with candy and twist the top of the cone. Cut off a long piece of red streamer and accordion fold it. Cut 1/4 cuts along the streamer to make a fringe. Starting at the bottom of the cone start wrapping the streamer around the cone taping it into place in intervals until you reach the top of the cone. To get to the candy inside simply tear the pepper open.

Upcoming Programs

I can't believe May is here already but it is. We don't have much going on in May at the library but our children's librarian will be very busy doing school visits to get ready for Summer Reading. And June will be full on fun things to do.
