Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!!

I want to give a really big round of applause to the awesome teen volunteers we had this summer. Without them summer reading would not have run so smoothly. We had teens tallying books at the summer reading table all summer and helping us with the programs. I hope all of them will be with us next year. From all of us here at the Hobart Library Thank You so much for volunteering.

IBT: Indiana Ballet Theatre

The Indiana Ballet Theatre is a non-profit organization that was established in 1980 by Gloria Tuohy. Ms. Tuohy's career has spanned 40 years of professional dance, teaching, choreography, and costume design in experience in England, Europe, and the United States. The IBT is dedicated to the art of dance and to enriching the cultural life of its community. They accomplish that through their education and outreach programs. The Indiana Ballet Theater came to the Hobart Library and put on an hour program. They first started by introducing themselves to the kids and how they became interested in dancing. They talked about the process of becoming a dancer and the type of gear you need to get started. The audience learned about the audition process, how to do stage makeup, the careers you can have from a dance background, and learned about the IBT organization. Along with all that the dancers demonstrated some of the dances and the moves it takes to dance flawlessly. The pictures below show some of the performances given. The very last picture shows the boys in the audience holding their arms out straight. They had to see how long they could hold it. Dance is hard work and they got a little taste of what the dancers go through.

Ice Cream Social

On July 29th the Hobart library had an ice cream social. Forty five people enjoyed the icy cold treats and I ran out of ice cream. I was so involved in dishing out the ice cream I forgot to take pictures. Shame on me.

Pet Show

The Lake Station New Chicago library had a real live pet show on Wednesday July 29th. The the library was invaded by 3 cats, 3 bunnies, and 11 puppies/dogs, and 43 humans. Below are some pictures of them.

Pre-School Pet Show

The Lake Station New Chicago library had a stuffed animal pet show. Pre-schoolers were able to come and bring their favorite stuffed animal to parade around. From the pictures below you can see that they had a dolphin, a duck, a chicken, a monkey and much more.

Creative Aquariums

On July 23rd school age children created their own aquariums. The best part is you don't have to feed the fish, because everything is fake. Using sand, moss, grow bugs, and much more the kids made some really great aquariums. I like the one below with the sand art at the bottom. Very Cool!

Marbelized Paper

On July 22nd pre-teens used marbles and paint to create their own marbleized paper creations. It was a lot of fun.

The last Toddler Story Hour for the summer was on July 23rd.

Rock Bands

On July 16th school age children learned about rock bands from a resident rocker, Tom Hazard. He demonstrated how to play an acoustic guitar, electrical guitar, and drums.

Twilight Prom

The Twilight Prom was based on Stephenie Meyer's books: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. In Twilight the main characters, Bella and Edward, attend the prom. I thought it would fun for fans of the book to be able to attend a prom of their own. I along with a few of our wonderful volunteers decorated the downstairs meeting room with prom decorations. Stars hung from the ceiling, streamer was draped on the walls, we had an arch, and quotes from the books on the walls as well. On the night of the prom we munched on pizza, chips, cookies, and cake. Listened to music, had a trivia contest, gave away prizes, and had a lot of fun. It was great to finally have the prom after having to postpone it after the library flooded.
